a glimmer into the life of a mum who loves fashion, decor and prosecco

Coming to an end . . .

this week and this month finally!  Both have been a bit chaotic, busy at work, and crazy with the girlies . . . . hoping it is going to shape up when we hit . . . . my birthday month!  April and yes I said month because I like to celebrate a number of times : ) . . . . I am rad you know, so my birth should be enjoyed and celebrated for 30 days, if not longer!   Speaking of birthdays, I got this card last year from a bestie and I have it in my office cause it makes me smile every time I see it . . .

Seen as it is Friday I am going to do an outfit post . . . wore this to work yesterday!

and here are a few beautiful pics I took of my City of Angeles . . .

Have a fantastic weekend!

3 going on 13

Do you read the online newspaper "The Huffington Post"?  I do on occasion, not consistently, because nothing in my life is consistent.  I like the articles, especially the section for parents.  It is broken down into 11 sub-sections: "parentry, moms, dads, pregnancy, babies, toddlers,  kids, teens, parent coach, global motherhood and the playroom"  The articles are always the perfect length for a busy, distracted parent and always seem to shed some light on phases or issues we are going through.  I read this great post, done by a mummy, today and I wanted to share an excerpt from it with you because I think my life is about there right now . . . . this had me rolling because it is spot on!

"It is at this point that the toddler transformed from the sweet child I once played Peek-a-Boo and rocked to sleep to what I can only imagine mirrors a meth addict detoxing. She ran around the house with such fervor that she drained the energy from every other breathing thing in the room -- flies ceased buzzing and plants wilted"

"Today, I was pretty sure that the whole clothing debacle was going to be a repeat when Maisy adamantly requested to wear her spaghetti sauce stained purple dress from the night before. After my initial response of "It's too dirty" failed to garner a different reaction than the previous day, I reminded myself of the notorious Albert Einstein quote, "Insanity: Doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results."

The Albert Einstein quote was a nice reminder that I need to switch up the way I react to things with little Ms. 3yr-old.  We are smarter than them, we can change the subject, distract, use reverse-psychology . . . its just a matter of having the patience and then taking the time to follow through . . . . and then there are weeks like this one where I am thinking of just posting this on my forehead . . .

bedtime woes

i hate bedtime right now (and I know its just a phase). . . . it was the only time, after children, that I was able to have time to myself but now it's hours of hell . . . and I hate it and I am not adjusting well to it as you maybe can tell.  Emerson was a wonderful sleeper up until she got in her big girl bed . . . since then it has been a steady but steep decline . . . and have I mentioned that I hate it?  Mr Hotpants loves it which makes it all the more annoying . . . .

bedtime starts at 7pm, followed by the ever-lasting requests "I need to brush my teeth," "I need water," "I'm hungry," etc.  This can go on for a good hour, then comes the meltdown, the crying, the "rub my back," the "one more book" which is finally followed by some sleep . . . . only to be interupted by my new all time favorite . . . "night terrors" which are in full swing from 10-12am (awesome). . . . then from 1-6am its just the normal "3yr old in our bed with feet in our face" night . . . . I think I am going to loose it soon.  Sleep deprivation is an actual real form of torture people!  Lack of sleep makes me a grumpy person, lack of "me" time is going to put me over the edge. . .

my wishful thinking for today . . . all this has me seriously thinking about doing this soon!

oh happy day . . .

listen to this, I promise it will make you smile and feel happy!

weekend in photos

This weekend was busy, I feel more exhausted than I did on Friday night . . . I hate that! We are dealing with night terrors and nightmares, shadows and a scary pink dragon who lives in the closet . . . . damn those closets!  Definitely rules out buying "Monsters, Inc" for this house!

It rained all day Sunday but it was a fun day . . . . an umbrella walk in the park splashing thru muddy puddles and counting how many worms we could find followed by a movie afternoon in a secret cozy "fort" built in the living room (while mummy napped in her big girl bed and daddy on the sofa!) . . . .

My grandma & grandad . . . . absolutely beautiful people

My favorite painting . . . it was my parents and now I have it!

Jackson, meet everybody. . . . everybody, meet Jackson

um . . . . ridiculously adorable!

Girly Guest Post

I am super-psyched to have an amazing yummy mama guest here today to share all her fabulousness with us.  Namrita is a huge fan of the blog and always sends me great emails, tips, or links to wonderful goodies! I honestly believe we are twins separated at birth . . . we just can't decide who our real parents are?!  She is not only a wonderful mama to the most handsomest little man, but also one of the most stylish mamas I know! So lets see what Nam has in store for us today . . .

When I turned 35 last year I made a promise to myself to take better care of my body and mental well-being. Here are a few of my secrets and tips...

Makeup and skincare
I have ALWAYS been HORRIBLE with taking care of my skin. I am totally that chic that went to bed with makeup on, yet still had decent looking skin despite this bad habit. I know, you can hate a little bit :) However, I finally purchased, LOVE, and use my Mia Clarisonic every night and morning.  Using it regularly has improved the tone, color, and smoothness of my skin beyond what I thought possible. I am now obsessed with having clean skin. Shocking given my previous lack of cleansing habits :)

The cleanser I have come to know and love that I use with my Mia is by Fresh, and it's amazing! It leaves my skin clean, fresh, and hydrated.

In the mornings after cleansing I splash on La Prairie's Marine line tonic.  It's a bit pricey, but it's my one splurge that I NEVER allow myself to run out of. It is beyond amazing! This stuff leaves my skin naturally glowing and I hardly use makeup anymore!

This leads me to my next step...In accordance with taking better care of my skin well into my golden years, I have come to love and use only a few products to keep my life simple.  Keep in mind this applies more to my daily weekday/workday ritual.  I still like to glam it up when I go out on the weekends; I am a girlie-girl after all!

I found this product and it is the best, it's the Vapour Organic Multi Use Blush. I dab some on my cheeks, on my lips, throw on a quick coat of mascara and I am out the door! It's the size of tampon basically, so I keep one in my purse at all times too for on the go refreshers during the day. Quick, easy, and the coloring is perfect. You can have that fresh look all day long!

Lastly I seal all the cleaning, toning and makeup in with a quick spritz of this floral water.  It smells so yummy and gives you that fresh, youthful, dewy look.

This may seem like a lot, but it's actually no time at all. I am a working momma that has about 45 mins to shower, get pretty, and get dressed for work. All while doing the same for an almost 5 year old little boy.  If I can do it, anyone can! Hahaha

I try to take care of myself physically, but let’s face it, it's so hard these days trying to squeeze exercise in on top of everything else. So us ladies need a little help of the "unnatural" kind!  I'm talking SLIMMERS!  I have tried everything under the sun over the years to help with the little "love bulges" as I fondly refer to them. No products have really impressed me, UNTIL NOW!  The Victoria's Secret slimmer called - So Curvaceous Push-Up Slip with panty.  This thing is AWESOME! I have always hated most shape wear because it usually comes with a built in bra that NEVER fits me right. I have big jubblies that seem to have a mind of their own as to where they want to fall/hang on my body. But this VS slimmer lets you use your own bra!  Honestly, it appears to take 10 pounds off my body immediately. And bonus that it doesn't ride up (because of built in panty feature) or hurt! It's seriously a win-win!

At the end of every long day (and after peeling off the slimmer!), I immediately walk into my house and put on my favorite and most comfortable pajamas by Eberjey. I  LOVE all their stuff, but these are the ones I live in, and they are unbelievably soft, comfortable, and CUTE

I have nothing to but LOVE, PRAISE, and ADMIRATION for this line- Emerson Fry!  To say I am obsessed is an understatement, and I know you feel me on this one Emma!  It is the perfect combination of clothing for work, life, play, and glam! Emerson is a genius, of this I am convinced. I am constantly stopped and asked who I'm wearing (a little celebrity moment!) when I am wearing any piece by this line.

Let me just say that these little puppies are almost ALWAYS on my feet!  They are by far the most comfortable flats ever, and to top it off they are beyond cute. I have a few pairs, but my favorite is the taupe and stars ballet flats. I wear them with EVERYTHING, whether it matches or not, hahaha

Yoga retreats
I have always loved yoga and tried to go to classes every chance I get (Bikram Yoga is my preferred method). But in lieu of classes, last year my New Year's resolution was to go to a Yoga Retreat once a year. A time where I could do what I love, de-stress from everyday life, and take some time to myself. I have NEVER gone on any sort of vacation by myself before this; I'd always had apprehension about just going somewhere alone and being around strangers. But like I said, 2011 was going to be a "new' me :) so I booked and went on a yoga retreat ALL BY MYSELF! It was an amazing experience- I came back refreshed, healthy, and in some ways better equipped as a mommy and worker. Sometimes you just need to admit that you need some ME time in order to be better for EVERYONE else in your lives.  The retreat I went on was this one and as soon as they put up the 2012 dates I will be signing up again for this year!

It's no secret, I have a bit of an obsession with shopping. I'm not going to go into details but here are a few of my absolute favorite stores that I NEVER walk out of empty handed. And that's not necessarily a good thing, lol. If you ever find yourself in the area around each of these places, walk in and take a peek, you will not be disappointed!

Oh and one last obsession that I can't live without right now . . . Tom Ford's Santal Blush perfume. It's like an exotic vacation in a bottle. I can't get enough of it! It's a must have!

Time machine

I was perusing Etsy and stumbled upon this store quite by accident, but wow am I glad!  These could literally be on the racks at Marc Jacobs, Barneys, or Tory Burch today.  These are original McCall pattern's . . . I may have to have a few made! My mum used to do this!  She would have all sorts of beautiful dresses, skirts and coats made and her closet looked like something wonderful and sparkly . . . out of Vogue!

1930's dress - I love the material used in the one on the right! This would look adorable in a silky polka dot material

1950's blouse - Ok can i just have one made in navy stripes and another in red!

1960's shift dress - this would be the easiest dress to wear, in any color, any fabric . . . you could take it from the beach to dinner

1960's fitted dress - I adore this one, especially in the white (or black) .... reminds me of Victoria Beckham's fitted dresses

LOVE these 1970's skirts and blouses . . . um hello pink chevron print!

1970's coat - I swear DVF had one like this out at Christmas this year!

1970's wide legged pants and wedges!

 1970's flares and sailor blouse . . . . hello Milly

1970's maxi dress and one piece bathing suit!!!

Fountain of energy

I have found it!! I have found my fountain of youth!  It is tiny, crunchy, and black and you will be blown away at how wonderful these make you feel!  They are chia seeds (yes the exact same chia seeds that are in chia pets!) I bought mine here

You can read all about the amazing health benefits by yourself but for a start they are super high in omegas 3's (more than the beloved flax seed), they are known to help lower cholesterol, and they are packed with antioxidants.  But for me, the most important benefit, is the crazy amount of natural energy that it gives you.  Not "bouncing-of-the-walls-redbull" energy but a calm, all day, natural and consistent energy that has allowed me to get more stuff done at work and at home.  I am no longer completely wiped out when I get home at night.   I am absolutely 100% committed and addicted to these as part of my daily diet now (Mr. Hotpants is also taking them and LOVES them)

The one thing that is a little weird is the texture.  You see they are super-water-retaining seeds, so when added to liquid they swell up and remind me of tadpole eggs or tapioca . . . . If you like that then great, I don't so I add 2 tablespoons of seeds to about 3-4oz of water and chug it before they even swell.  They don't really have a taste, maybe a poppy seed-like taste.  You can add they to shakes, oatmeal, juice, etc.  You can find tons of recipes online also . . . another benefit? You can bake with them instead of using eggs!

Even Dr. Oz is a big fan . . . . and if you know anything,  you know that celebrity Dr's know everything we don't and that is why the celebrities are gorgeous, tiny and perfect, they eat chia pets and sh*t!!
