We are big fans of the National Geographic Kids books & magazines (here). We put them in Emerson's birthday party baggies for all the kids and they were a hit - they have tons of different animals to learn about and are all about $2-3 each
Mr. Hotpants goes through work watches like no-one I know! I am not sure what he does with them but they always break or go missing! He uses them to time patients so they have to have a seconds hand. This was the last one he ordered and in person I love it! The green is awesome (here)
